New Tournament Rules and Policies

NMA/ISKA South Africa is making a few changes to our tournament protocols which will be sent to you via email correspondence over the next few weeks. The most important of all changes is the pre-entry policy.

NEW TOURNAMENT RULES

There are a few new rules the NMA is implementing this year. We would appreciate it if you study them carefully and ensure all your members and supporters are aware of them as soon as possible. The changes are not meant to be negative in any way. Rather put into place to ensure fair competition for everyone and ensure little as possible slows down or interferes with the running of the event. These include the following:

1.       CLUB  PRE-ENTRY REGISTRATION:

All Clubs / Dojos and organisations entering teams MUST pre-register all their entries before or by the pre-registration due dates. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES will we be taking Team registrations on the day at the tournament. We have no problem if you arrive with your team and have a few late entries to enter on the day. We will also have staff available for added division entry cards for already pre-registered team members should they wish to enter more divisions. With the magnitude of the event you can understand the need for early or on time registration. We have to prepare Instructors packages and all individual competitors division cards in time for the tournament and also deal with the time consuming process of setting up the venue. So please, take note of the deadline for pre registration and in doing so help our admin staff cope with this huge task they face each year to make your experience at Destiny memorable.

LATE ENTRIES ON THE DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT WILL BE AT A SUBSTANTIALLY HIGHER RATE THAN THE PRE-REGISTRATION AMOUNT.

2.       RING SIDE COACHING:

ONLY 1 COACH per TEAM ( NOT per team member ) may be present on the floor whilst that competitor is actually competing. Not while he/she is sitting or waiting for their turn to fight. Parents, friends & team members are not permitted on the floor. (see parent present policy at point #4) Absolutely NO SIDELINE COACHING  by coaches, parents or team members will be allowed in any division including semi / light / full contact, Forms of any kind, Grappling or MMA divisions while the fight is taking place. No shouting,  screaming or issuing technical assistance is allowed. We have many competitors present who do not have the advantage of having their personal coaches present and are therefore left on their own to make decisions and apply strategy towards winning. We intend to ensure this playing field is kept level! Besides, coaching should be done at the Dojo not at the tournament floor which tends to confuse competitors more than assist them. Remember it’s not you that’s fighting, it’s the competitor. If you want to compete then by all means enter the division to do so. Friends, family and fellow competitors can cheer as much and as loud as they wish but from the stands. (stands definition does not include standing next to the ring boundary. It means where the seating is for public to view the event.

3.       NO KIT BAGS, FOOD OR BEVERAGES ON OR NEAR THE RINGS OR ANYWHERE ON THE VENUE FLOOR:

We are not allowing Kit Bags onto or anywhere near the rings. The ring is a competition space. Not a warm up or storage area. We have 16 rings in total. Let’s say with anywhere between 8 and 40 competitors each. That’s hundreds of competitors on the floor at one time with hundreds of tog bags lying around taking up valuable space and simply making the event look untidy! All you need is your gloves & mouth guard in your hands. Your shins & boots should be on anyway so there is no need for kit bags on the floor. Please ensure this rule is adhered to at all times by your members. We are not going to make announcements as to whose bag is at which floor. We will simply instruct Security staff to remove it and place it at a particular point within the venue for you to find later. The venue (Bellville Velodrome ) has issued us with a no food & bev policy allowed on the sports floor.

4.       PARENTS PRESENT POLICY:

We understand the need for support when it comes to our young warriors. The nerves, the need for feeling someone in your corner and the importance of ensuring these young champions are both protected and encouraged is paramount to NMA. As result, we are allowing 1 parent to be close to them at the ring for such support. We ask of you though to understand certain parameters and to please respect both the officials and the tournament rules especially rule #2 as stated above. This allowance is for all competitors up until the age of 10 years old. If however you have a child with any form of difficulty or certain medical restrictions, we will make allowance for them as well should they be older.

5:   RESPECT & BEHAVIOUR POLICY:

Unsportsmanlike behaviour by competitor, coach or parent will be met with immediate disqualification of the competitor in relation to the offence. This includes swearing, challenging the referees/judges, arguing, challenging or threatening fellow competitors or their coaches or in general not complying to NMA rules & regulation pertaining to all matters. Please understand that from NMA there can be no tolerance with regards to this type of behaviour. We cannot issue warnings or give preference to any one individual. Immediate action will be taken by the Chief referee and will be supported by tournament arbitrators. Action can include individual and entire team disqualification depending on the severity of the offence.

6:   DRESS CODE & SAFETY EQUIPMENT  POLICY:

All divisions entered must be respected with regards to uniform and safety equipment.  No MMA or Thai shorts are allowed in the Semi, Light, Sport Full Contact fighting divisions, Tag team matches or other Team events. MMA or kickboxing pants may be worn in all Sport MMA, Submission Grappling and MMA Sport Full Contact divisions. Kickboxing pants & T- Shirt or full Gi must be worn during breaking divisions and only Traditional Gi’s may be worn in All Traditional divisions including Kata and Kumite. All protective wear must also be inside or under  your pants and not visible in any way. This includes shin guards & groin protection (boxes).

7:   HIGH KICK CHALLENGE CATCH  POLICY:

Previously NMA had “catchers” to ensure especially children landed safely when attempting the high kick challenge. With immediate effect all juniors must have their own safety catcher present when attempting their high kick record. The “catcher” however is not allowed to influence the competitors ability to achieve true height by creating a false sense of safety or giving the competitor the advantage of attempting an “unsafe & un-realistic height” due to them not having to be concerned with their landing. The definition of the “attempt” is A: short run up B: height achievement through contact onto the board and C: the competitors ability to land safely by themselves without doing harm to any part of the body in the process. They must clearly have their landing in mind when attempting their record height. The Safety assistant is there only in the event should something go drastically wrong and to prevent serious contact with the pad or ground. He may not catch the competitor in mid air to ensure safe landing. The short and tall of it is that the competitor from now onwards is responsible for every aspect of his/her attempt. This rule will also ensure true & fair competition by all competitors now knowing that the attempted height is restricted to 2 important issues, the ability to make contact with the target and the ability to land safely. This was different in the past as they had to be concerned with the first issue but seldom or never the second. Please ensure you understand this ruling clearly and if any doubt exists feel free to contact any one of the NMA executive to explain in person.

8:   REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND WAIVER FORMS:

8.1 All competitors must complete in full the individual entry & waiver form.  If you are a minor, the form must be signed by a guardian or parent. ALL WAIVER FORMS MUST BE COLLECTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR OF THE DOJO AND HANDED IN AT THE DESTINY VENUE BEFORE YOU CAN RECEIVE YOUR PACKAGE. If you arrive at Destiny without the waiver, each one will need to be completed again and in particular we reserve the right to reject any junior competitor that has no or incomplete waiver form. IMPORTANT: The Instructor cannot & may not sign on behalf of a guardian or parent! I have instructed my staff to check each and every name on the register during   the two days of competition. Should they find a discrepancy or missing waiver, the competitor will not be allowed to compete until one has been emailed by their parent or guardian so please heed to out request and ensure you have all waivers present at the venue.

8.2 Each competitor will receive a unique competition number associated with their Club / instructor. What you need to be very sure of is that on the registration sheet attached, that all particulars of the individual competitors is 200% correct. This includes:

  • CORRECT TELEPHONE CONTACT NUMBERS  (it may not be the same contact number for 1 or more student as in it MAY NOT BE THE INSTRUCTORS CELL NUMBER FOR ALL COMPETITORS)
  • CORRECT EMAIL ADDRESS OF INDIVIDUAL SHOULD THEY BE SENIOR AND CORRECT EMAIL ADDRESS OF A PARENT SHOULD THEY BE A MINOR OR CHILD. (NOT THE INSTRUCTORS EMAIL )
  • CORRECT INSTRUCTORS DETAILS ON TOP OF ALL REGISTRATION SHEETS REGARDLESS OF HOW MANY YOU SEND.

The reason for this is because we have changed our DATA collection system. In the past competitors would be taken to a trophy & data capturing area where they received their trophies and the staff entered manually all the contact details to be processed later. This is now changed. Because of the unique individual number allocated to each competitor, this info will be printed onto all fight cards and will also be manually written in at the table when compiling draw sheets for the division. This means that A: medals and trophies will now be issued at the ring and B: the draw sheet with the correct individual code is the only data we need to later reconcile all that persons personal particulars. THIS BECOMES CRITICALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE OF NATIONAL TEAM SELECTIONS! If you don’t have their own personal details correct on the registration sheet, they will miss out on selections and immediate correspondence we need to issue them to ensure their team position is secured. The moral of the story is issue the individual waivers out to students, get them back, transfer all correct data onto registration documents before emailing the electronic version (NO FAXES OR J PEG FILE EMAILS – ONLY THE ACTUAL ELECTRONIC REGISTRATION SHEET) and lastly, make sure you bring all waivers with to the destiny venue before you can obtain your package.

9:   NO REFUNDS OR CHANGING OF DIVISION CARDS / ON DAY ENTRY COST TO BE CONSIDERABLY HIGHER:

All entry fees paid into the NMA account as final payment is NON REFUNDABLE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE! This includes injury, sickness, not making the division on time or not making the tournament for any reason. No entered division can be swopped for another. If you wish to enter a new division, it is a new entry with entry fee due! Division cards may also not be swopped with competitors. Remember your name and unique number is printed on all individual cards.
