Why Join the NMA

Men, women, and kids have excelled in our style of martial arts.

You can be short, tall, thin, or big – it doesn’t matter. Our instructors will teach you and develop a style that works best for you.

It’s never too late to start training.

The average age of our adult program is about 27 years old, with a bunch of students over age 40. Absolutely no experience is required to begin your training.

You have never done a day of exercise in your life? No problem!

You do not have to be in shape to begin training at our academy – most people who begin are not. At NMA, our instructors have years of specialized training in physical fitness, along with their martial arts expertise, and will develop a program specifically designed for you.

Our system of martial arts and self-defence has been proven time and time again by our instructors and students.

Our instructors, all competitive fighters with many years of training, have utilized our techniques on the mat and in the ring – at the national and international level. The difference between joining our academy and other academies is that with us, you know that the techniques we are teaching you work – since we have applied them before in actual tournaments and spent hundreds of hours at the Dojo perfecting them. We are 100% confident that our style of mixed martial arts is effective in self-defence.

At the NMA, we teach REAL MIXED MARTIAL ARTS (MMA) and Self-Defence.  Our kick/Thaiboxing is world class, our MMA is world class, and our submission grappling is world class.

Straight to the Wolves

Many martial art programs mix you in with the regular class on your first day! Just think about it… how can someone teach a class of people who have been training for two to three years… and then teach you your first class at the same time? Either the advanced guys are missing out or the beginners are missing out…

World Class Takedowns

NMA is known around the country for being one of the few Academies’s to specialise and possess very strong takedowns.  Mixed Martial Arts, or fighting in general, can be grouped into three areas:

  1. Striking (i.e. kickboxing / Muay Thai / K1 / Boxing)
  2. Takedowns (i.e. shoot fighting / wrestling)
  3. Ground Grappling (i.e. brazillian / japanese jiu-jitsu / Russian Sambo)

An Organized MMA Ranking System

NMA provides an organized curriculum and has separated ranks between Striking/ Take downs/Stand up fighting and ground work (Japanese / Brazilian & Russian Jiu-Jitsu), which also includes Filipino martial arts. This is the ultimate style of fighting and self-defence which incorporates the three major areas of fighting into one system. Our ranking system is strict and only people deserving of being promoted will earn it! From my personal knowledge, we are the only gym in South Africa with a Mixed Martial Arts ranking system. Many gyms that advertise “MMA” are Jiu-Jitsu schools that throw punches and kicks once in a while – and promote through their kimono JJ ranking system…

A Structured Beginner Course

When you start out at NMA, you will be going through a special beginner friendly course. In this class, you will be learning from an organized curriculum that balances striking, takedowns, and ground grappling. The classes are designed to work at a pace that beginner’s can absorb. The beginner’s class also takes into account that you may be totally out of shape – one of its principal designs is to get you into good shape and allow you to train harder in the next level.

Student Safety

A common misconception about MMA training is that to learn effective MMA, you have to get into wild and crazy sparring matches. FALSE!

At NMA, most of our students have families and jobs and can’t afford to leave the gym with black eyes!

The grappling and sparring that is done at NMA is done with control and only when you are ready. Your first sparring sessions take place after you graduate from the beginner course and in the beginning you would only be sparring with advanced students, so that you can get comfortable. The idea is to train smart and have fun. The NMA training motto is we are here to train with one another, not against each other! Only our amateur and professional COMPETITIVE fighters do some hard sparring. Many MMA schools have this misconception that the only way to learn how to fight is to put on boxing gloves and swing for the fences! This is not true… and actually can be counter-productive, besides being dangerous.
Many gyms also lack the technique to spar with control and spar hard to compensate for their lack of technique. Brawling during training proves nothing and only hinders the learning process and injures people. If you really want to brawl, save it for the street or in the cage! Safety is our number one concern.

Weapons Training

We specialise in Khali (Short Stick) fighting which is in our opinion one of the most practical weapons to learn as all the techniques originate from Filipino Martial arts which once mastered can easily be practised against an opponent with or without the Khali. Higher ranked adults, if chosen are also taught Knife fighting as a defensive weapon and tactical knife to knife fighting sport. The vast majority of MMA gyms have no weapons training… and the one or two gyms that do offer weapons training offer very unrealistic techniques. If self defence is important to you – then this is a serious issue.

Great Customer Service

Above anything, this is what we take the most pride in. Our goal is to go above and beyond what you would expect from us. We are constantly trying to find new ways to please our students. It is hard to explain this because it is really the little things that make our customer service stand out… you will notice it by the level of professionalism experienced at Dojo and the code of conduct we follow.
What I just told you about our gym is just a very small part of what makes us unique… I could go on and on. Instead of listing a thousand things on the internet, I would much rather have you come in for yourself and try it out. I know you are busy. To come out and try us out for a day may not be worth your time. What can one free day tell you? Well, to be honest, I believe one day is all you would need to see we are the best!

I know you might be thinking,
“Yeah but there has to be a catch…”

There is no catch.  We currently have 76 affiliated Dojos throughout South Africa with a membership of several thousand which is growing each month.
The NMA is the only government recognised Sport Martial Arts organisation by MAGC & SASCOC and as such is the only organisation allowed to select National Teams to attend World Championships and international events. Our National Championships billed as “DESTINY” draws on average 1200 + competitors each year, has over 480 divisions in 2 days, is televised Nationally and has teams competing from all over the world in attendance.
